Background
In January 2023, the Van Community Palliative Care Program (VPC) requested the ability to store MRN on the client record and display on the Yellow Bar (client context bar) because physicians may be dictating into a secondary system where this MRN is required.
When a user is logged into VPC, the EMR Reg Form displays a drop list for MRN Type and MRN Number. When the MRN is recorded for a client, it displays on the yellow bar (the yellow bar may need to be re-loaded).
Other POSs may request to store MRN for their clients. See JIRA ticket EMR-3691 for history.
Step 1 - Review Request - A POS Requests ability to store MRN
- The POS must determine the MRN Type (e.g. VPP CERNER). This code and description should match PARIS MRN. Since MRNs may change due to system updates (e.g. CST), the official name of the MRN should be confirmed with the PARIS Team (Richmond Munro / Janine MacDougall). For example, the description for MRN-Sechelt Hospital was changed to MRN-Sechelt Hospital (Legacy) in Profile EMR by PARIS Group (Janine, Richmond) and Sharon Chan.
- The reason for storing MRN should be reviewed. Is there a real need to store this MRN to support a clinician workflow, or is it for repository purposes. Please note, at the time of creation of this article, MRN is NOT synched with PARIS. Recording MRN in two places should be carefully considered.
Step 2 – Set up POS to Store MRN in Profile EMR
Once approval has been given for the MRN Type and for the POS to store MRN, the configuration for the POS is as follows:
- MRN Type is stored in a short code called Registry Key. This MRN Type is not static – it may change, depending on if the name of the system changes (e.g. VPP Cerner used to be called something else).
- The Client MRN Type short code displays the different MRNs that are possible options for the POS. If the VPC wants another MRN type in the drop-list this is the short code for it “Client MRN Type”
- A short code is required to display the Record MRN functionality at the bottom of the EMR Registration Form.
